Experience the land in a unique way. A modern take on a particular visual practice: En Plein Air commonly refers to the act of painting outdoors. It is one of the most intimate ways to learn about our surroundings by carefully observing and representing what is in front of us. In addition, digital medium has quickly become a viable option for outdoor usage and is much more convenient than traditional offerings.

Introduction to Pattern Drafting & Design (FSDP-9030)

Explore the prototyping process through pattern design and sample making.  This course will discuss the differences between a block and a pattern, cover concepts such as dart manipulation, and work through measuring the body for pattern development.  Participants will draft a basic block with custom measurements, discuss fit through fitting a mockup of the block, and work through pattern manipulation to create a personal design.

*Note, to get the most out of this course you should have basic sewing skills and have worked with sewing patterns previously.  
Final work for the course may not be a completely finished garment.

Students will have access to designated labs (3960 & 3980) at the Faculty of Design in a shared space environment. All materials must be supplied by the student. No materials will be provided except thread (fabric, paper, notions, feet + bobbins, tools must be brought in by student). Machine technician or student assistant will be on site to provide non-instructional support as the Open Lab is for independently driven work. All policies and procedures of the Design Faculty and its labs must be strictly adhered to. Completion of the WSD Sewing Lab Shutdown and Basic Safety Training is mandatory prior to accessing the labs. Previous experience using industrial sewing equipment is required.

Learn how to make your own raincoat, perfect for the Vancouver climate. Working with a pre-made pattern, students will learn and experiment with sew-free and specialty machinery we have on campus, creating their very own raincoat. Through techniques such as seam sealing, both by machine and by hand, working with waterproof fabrics, and learning sewing 'tricks', students will gain greater understanding of the steps involved in the process of making a raincoat, while ending the course with their very own raincoat, perfect for the rainy season.
